When reflecting on John (Jack) Gude and Jean Rawley Gosnell’s lives, family members recall their family–centered approach to life and the joy and pride they felt in exposing their children and grandchildren to nature and quality education.
They were not outspoken about their priorities, but rather wove them into their families’ everyday lives. Teaching their children and grandchildren how to sail, crab, and fish on the Chesapeake Bay, spending summers in Acadia National Park, or exploring gardens and lakes; Jack and Jean instilled an appreciation of nature simply through immersion.
They also wanted both generations to have access to the best formal education opportunities. They supported all of their children and grandchildren through primary, secondary, and collegiate-level schooling. They loved to attend grandparent visiting days, and they proudly watched graduation ceremonies, traveling near and far to do so.
Their family is honored to carry on their legacy through the John G. and Jean R. Gosnell Foundation, Inc.
Mission
To ensure present and future generations’ accessibility to educational opportunities and to experiences in nature, particularly addressing the most vulnerable – children who face barriers to success in the education system, and natural environments that are at risk.
